Lonely Miranda Whittaker finds a friend in Natalie Ellenberg, daughter of an affectionate, cultured Jewish family. But as the tide of anti-Semitism sweeps into 1930s Liverpool, the two sisters witness the death of Nat's baby sister during a fascist march.

Natalie, studying music in Paris, disappears after the Nazis invade the city. Miranda, still haunted by baby Rachel's tragic death, joins the Red Cross.
