The story follows a fictionalized version of Paul Auster, a writer commissioned by The New York Times to write a Christmas story. Struggling to avoid seasonal clichés and sentimentality, he confides in Auggie Wren, the quirky clerk at his local Brooklyn cigar shop. Auggie promises to tell him the best Christmas story ever told, in exchange for a lunch.Auggie narrates an event from his past: after chasing a young shoplifter who dropped his wallet, Auggie decides to return it on Christmas Day. He arrives at a rundown apartment and meets the boy's blind, elderly grandmother. Despite knowing Auggie is a stranger, she pretends he is her grandson, and Auggie willingly plays along. They share a warm, touching Christmas dinner built on a mutual, comforting lie. Before leaving, Auggie secretly takes a stolen camera from the apartment, which he later uses for his lifelong photography project.
