John James Audubon (1785-1851) was a French-American artist, naturalist, and ornithologist, widely celebrated for his comprehensive, detailed illustrations of North American birds. His monumental work, the hand-colored, life-size book The Birds of America (published 1827-1839), is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed and a masterpiece of American art.
